Hypothyroid/Hyperthyroid
Hypothyroid in Pets
Hypothyroid is the insufficiency in the secretion of the thyroid hormones which results from disease in the thyroid gland.
Symptoms of hypothyroid are lethargy, changes in skin and hair coat and weight gain.
In order to treat hypothyroid, a full physical exam is performed to determine whether the signs above may be due to poor nutrition or lack of supplementation. Once an exam is performed, we may recommend a thyroid test which will determine if supplementation or medication is needed. If your pet is diagnosed with hypothyroid, annual testing is recommended to maintain the proper medication dosage.
Hyperthyroid
Hyperthyroid is an overactive thyroid gland that produces too much of the thyroid hormone.
It is caused by a non-malignant tumor .
Symptoms of hyperthyroid are increased appetite and weight loss.
In order to treat hyperthyroidism, a physical exam is first performed. After the exam, we may recommend a thyroid test to determine if supplementation or medication is needed. If your pet is diagnosed with hypothyroidism, an annual test is recommended to maintain the proper medication dosage.
