Pet Pain Management

Over the past several years, many studies have been done to assess the level of pain that animals feel.  In the past, it was thought that animals did not feel pain similar to that of humans.  Through these studies, the veterinary industry has recognized that animals do feel pain; however, they hide it due to the “flight or fight” response that they innately have bred into them.  Animals are “wired” similarly to humans; so therefore, they feel pain much the same way that we do.

Pets show pain through a variety of different ways: loss of normal behavior, expression of abnormal behaviors, reaction to touch and physiologic parameters.  Please visit International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management or AAHA/AAFP Pain Management Guidelines for more detailed information about how animals feel and show pain.

Pain management or the reduction of pain is essential in keeping your pet healthy and comfortable.  AWVH continues to strive to keep up-to-date on the latest pain management protocols to treat both acute and chronic pain.
