Dr. Colleen Mathews
Dr. Colleen Mathews grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan in Illinois. After college, she headed west for Colorado and graduated from CSU Veterinary School. In 2004, she became certified in Acupuncture and did a brief internship with a holistic veterinarian in Longmont. Dr. Mathews has been working in the Golden, Arvada and Evergreen area since 1997. In her free time, she enjoys wandering the mountains with her dogs, photography, biking, and camping. Dr. Mathews’ animal family includes Oakley, pictured here as well as Jordy, a Chihuahua mix, two kitties, Cayenne and Curry and 2 goldfish.
Dr. Erin Wendt
Dr. Erin Wendt is an Indiana native who vacationed often in Colorado with her family and decided to make a permanent move three years ago. After completing her undergrad degree in Zoology at Michigan State, she attended veterinary school at Purdue. During veterinary school Dr. Wendt completed a study abroad program in South Africa working with native wildlife species and another program in Brno, Czech Republic assisting in equine, small animal, and exotic animal clinics.
Dr. Wendt is now certified as a Fear Free Practitioner after taking numerous hours of training and passing certification exams. Dr. Wendt is dedicated to taking the “pet out of petrified” when pets and their families visit us for an appointment.
Dr. Christina Copple
Christina Copple is a native of North Carolina where she has lived in Raleigh for the last 10 years. There, she attended North Carolina State University for her undergraduate and veterinary degrees. After veterinary school she did a year internship at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in New Jersey. She then returned to NC where she completed her radiology residency at NCSU followed by a year there as a clinical instructor in the radiology department. She achieved her status as a Diplomate in the American College of Veterinary Radiology in 2011. Her imaging interests include ultrasonography, radiology and computed tomography.
Dr. Ben Read
We’re excited to announce the addition of a veterinarian to our current great team of doctors. Dr. Ben Read will be joining us in mid-September, moving to Colorado from Massachusetts. Dr. Read completed his veterinary education at St. George’s University in Grenada, West Indies and his clinical year at Washington State University. Following a family tradition, Dr. Read became a veterinarian after observing veterinary medicine up close throughout his life as his father is a veterinarian with over thirty years in practice! Dr. Read is excited to make the move to “Colorful Colorado” to enjoy hiking, camping, and photography. He’s also a musician, as are several members of our team, and plays several instruments including the drums. Since we don’t have a garage, we may have to start an “attic” band soon!
Lea Ann McCaslin
Lea Ann joined our family in December 2015 as our Hospital Manager. Lea Ann’s hometown is Osceola, Missouri in the Ozarks and her family still lives there. She moved to Colorado in 2000 as she’d always wanted to live here. Her dad grew up here in Cedaredge (on the Western Slope).
She attended college at the University of MO-Columbia and earned her degree in Personnel Management.
Lea Ann worked for a variety of companies including Marriott Hotels, Estee Lauder Corp, and Coldwater Creek before taking a job nearer her heart at the Dumb Friends League where she worked for seven years. She then worked for a large, national veterinary practice but was looking for the chance to join a team at an established local hospital.
In her free time, Lea Ann likes to travel, hike, go to mountain festivals and see live music. She has volunteered at several animal shelters and the Denver Zoo and would like to train one of her dogs to reach the CGC level to allow hospital and hospice visits with her pet. Her passion, other than her dogs JD (DFL alumni, pictured here) and Doc (from GRRR), is music and she’s been singing since she was 3-4 and is learning the fiddle and guitar. Lea Ann is a Swallow Hill member and enjoys music classes, lessons, and concerts through that organization.
Stephanie went to Bel-Rea and started working at AWVH in 2006 as a veterinary technician. She has a Labrador retriever named Mo and a Lab mix named Paisley. Stephanie enjoys all aspects of her job, especially radiology.

Graduating from Bel-Rea in June of 2014, Brianna joined our team in July of 2014. Brianna loves animals but found technician work wasn’t for her and instead put her talents to use at our front desk. Originally from Michigan, she loves soaking up the Colorado Mountains and going drag racing in the summer. At home, Brianna has a German Shepherd Doberman mix, Dzus (racing term, pronounced Zeus). Brianna’s dream pet would be a Mini Potbelly Pig.

Kathy joined our group in the summer of 2014 after working for many years in the corporate world and finding it not as fulfilling as working with animals. Kathy has a soft spot for senior critters and has been a foster haven for many dog friends. She lives in the front range foothills and recently welcomed senior pup Bridget to her family. Kathy’s passions are ice skating at Nederland’s outdoor rink in the winter, and water skiing in the warmer months. She’s pictured here with Bridget.
Richele graduated from Bel Rea in December 2016 and joined our team shortly thereafter. She credits her mom with steering her toward what eventually has become her career in veterinary medicine and says her hobby at present is studying for the test to become a Certified Veterinary Technician coming up in February.
Richele and her junior high school sweetheart, Christopher, are planning a November 2017 wedding at the top of the clock in the Denver Clocktower! In the meantime, she’s quickly learning the ropes here at AWVH.
Jennifer is native of Ohio who moved to Colorado 10 years ago. She graduated from Bel-Rea in 2014 and joined our team in November of 2016. She has four cats, Spot, Harley, Hendrix, and Leo. She also has Barney Rubble, a tortoise and a goldfish named Dumbledore.
Jen’s passions are literature and astronomy.
With her infectious laugh and love of all species of pets, we’re sure you’ll be as pleased as we are to welcome Emily to the AWVH Family! Emily joins us after an extensive history training dogs and training dog trainers and time spent in customer service in a veterinary clinic, pet resort, and in retail. In her spare time, Emily is an amateur astronomist, loves the outdoors and camping, and spends time with her own pet “crew.”
Family is important to Beth and we’re glad to have her as a member of ours! Beth has a big family; she shares her home with her three sons, two dogs, and two lizards. A native of Wisconsin, Beth moved to Colorado since she felt it was a great place to raise her kids. Beth has been a CVT for seventeen years; for eight of those years, she owned her own pet grooming business. She loves all the opportunities to be in the outdoors here and especially likes hiking and going to outdoor concerts. She also enjoys “car concerts” while on road trips and will likely have Green Day at the top of her playlist.
